Reading | Inferring

Inferring is using your prior knowledge to figure something out

To infer start with trying to understand the image, for example if someone was trying to infer a few things about this image:

First, someone uses their prior knowledge, for example, someone might know this person is in a relay race. Someone would also know that this person has the legs in the ready position.

If people would know all of that then they would be able to make a inferring statement like this:
Someone is getting ready to run in a relay race.

Comment Thread | Commenting

This week for commenting thread I commented on Te Raumati's blog post on her geometric masking art.

My question for her was "What was the hardest part and why?". I liked how she explained how to make the geometric masking art.

Go check out more of her blog post - http://pbsteraumati.blogspot.com/

Basic Fact Boxes | Maths

I completed my basic facts task. Basic Fact boxes are used to record your maths skills. The basic facts go up to one hundred. I went up to 20 in addition and it took me three minutes and twenty two seconds. When I do my basic facts again I am going to go up to 20 still but I will do addition and subtraction.

SSR Selfie

Today I completed the SSR selfie task. The SSR Selfie task is used to retell or summarise a book. The book I read was "Family Friends and Furry Creatures. This book was about how Tom made his own furry creature and when his mother woke up and had fur on her face. To find more information about the book look at the DLO.

Maori | 10 Pipiri LS1

In Maori we were making number chart. The number chart was used to write down the number translated into Maori.

To write numbers in Maori the place value has to be set, for example, if I wrote 20 it would be rua tekau because "rua" is two and "tekau" is the tens, so rua tekau means two groups of tens.

I enjoyed writing the numbers in Maori.

Volleyball | Kiwisport

In volleyball the set position is the the ready position.

To set the ball put the hands above the head

When setting the ball to the opponent bend the legs to keep balanced.

Keep one foot in front of the other to get ready to set the ball to the opponent.

When someone sets the ball it should always end in the set position on top of an head.

Masking Art | Geometric

We were learning about geometric masking art. Masking means to hiding or covering something and geometric means basic shapes such as simple curves and simple lines.

We practiced sectioning off parts on an Google Drawing. Next we started on our real copy of the geometric art. We figured out where we were going to section off parts.

After I sectioned off the parts, I coloured in the sections. The colours I used were, black, peach ,light blue, orange, brown, pink, purple & yellow.

I enjoyed colouring in the sectioned parts, this activity was fun.

Light & Sound | Inquiry

We were learning about light & sound vocabulary. Sound is when something travels and gets weaker and weaker. Light is to make something visible.

Our first activity was sorting out the meaning of words that relate to sound and light. We had to use our prior knowledge to find the meanings of some words. We had three different dictionary sites to look at to help find the meanings as well.

Our second activity was find, draw, animate and act four words. For the draw,  we drew a prism making a rainbow. Our animation was about vibration. Lastly our act was a video on transparent.

The words we used were transparent, vibrate, decibels and prism.

I enjoyed drawing the picture of the prism.

Subtraction | Place Value

We were learning about subtraction using place value. Subtraction is taking or subtracting an amount of something from another thing.

One of the problems I solved was:

227 - 163 = ?

163 = 100 + 60 + 3

First I split the number one hundred twenty seven.

227 - 3 = 22

When subtracting always start from the ones.

224 - 60 = 164

After that I took away the tens.

164 - 100 = 64

Finally I took away the hundreds.

I think using place value for subtraction is helpful because it helps me understand the equations easier.

Mental Verbs | Physical Verbs | State Of Being

Verbs are actions words, for example jump, walk and rip. There are three types of verbs, mental verbs, physical verbs & state of being.

State of being verbs are the verb "be" is, for example is, are and will.

Physical verbs are what people do, for example flick, chug and smash.

Mental verbs describe a thinking action, for example decide, imagine & remember.

Verbs help describe actions.

Predictions | Grandparents Day

For reading we made predictions, those predictions were educated guesses. Educated guesses clues are made prior knowledge.

I thought that "the grandparents had a good day". This prediction was incorrect, the real answer was "The grandma was confused and mad, she thought that she could be able to go the grandparents day".

One more prediction I did was "I think that the grandpa won’t get anything done because he always slow at doing things". This prediction was also wrong because the grandpa was more faster then the grandma.

I think predicting is a good strategy to use in reading because it helps me understand what is going to happen next.

The book we read was - Grandparents Day

South Pacific Beats | Interactive Summary

We made an interactive summary about the article "South Pacific Beats". We learnt four different reading strategies to help us understand this article.

For my interactive summary I used my prior knowledge and skimming to help with writing down information either about Rachael Hall, the pato or the lali.

My prior knowledge helped me by me write what I already new about Rachael Hall, the pato and the lali. The reading strategy skimming also helped me so I could understand the article.

Properties Of Light

Light is a source make objects visible and easier the see or find.

One of the properties of light is that, light cannot go through opaque objects. This was proven when the opaque object blocked the light from passing through.

Another property of light is transparent objects can go through light. When the light was going through the glass it went through because the object is transparent.

Another property of light is that light can change positions depending on the angle of the mirror.
When the light shined into the mirror it reflected.

One more property of light is that light can form a rainbow using a prism. If a light source is put on top of a prism it forms a rainbow. The prism makes a rainbow because the white light is split into many colours.

Check the embed document for more properties of light.

Reading Large Numbers

Reading large numbers can be hard to read because they are large and sometimes if they have millions.

To read 547 829 316 first read the millions. The millions is read like, five hundred and forty seven million.

Next read the thousands as eight hundred and twenty nine thousand. The last part is to read the ones like, three hundred and sixteen.
